I could find nothing on the Internet to corroborate this claim.
There's no doubt that the Coronation was a landmark event in the history of television, at least in the UK. In the words of one website, "If television had [previously] been regarded as nothing more than a gimmick or the luxury of a select few, then that perception was blown away on this historic day."
This, in a nutshell, is why it's a quiz question - and not an unreasonable one, in the sense that it's not a hard one to answer. I would just like to know if this question is factually correct.
Most if not all sources agree that the television audience, at 23 or 24 million, was around double that on radio. The same website as quoted above - reproducing a contemporary account - says that this was the first time this had happened.
But was it the first time the television audience had outnumbered the radio audience?
Like I say: I have been unable to verify this either way.
